Abstract
A deep and contextual understanding of the Qur’an requires a thorough examination of the methods, approaches, and interpretive styles employed within the Islamic scholarly tradition. This paper aims to systematically outline various exegetical methods, including tafsīr bi al-maʾthūr, tafsīr bi al-raʾy, and tafsīr ishārī, each characterized by distinct approaches to interpreting Qur’anic verses. The study also explores linguistic, historical, thematic, and scientific approaches used in the interpretive process, along with exegetical styles that reflect specific orientations, such as fiqhī, ṣūfī, adabī ijtimāʿī, falsafī, and ʿilmī styles of interpretation. This research employs a qualitative method through a literature review of both classical and contemporary sources. The findings indicate that the diversity of interpretive methods and approaches reflects the flexibility of Islamic teachings in responding to changing times. In conclusion, integrating multiple interpretive methods and approaches is essential to maintaining the Qur’an’s relevance in modern life and to enhancing the community’s understanding of its divine messages.
