Abstract

This paper explores the position and implementation of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) within the framework of Indonesia’s National Education System Law (Sisdiknas) No. 20 of 2003. IRE is recognized as an integral component of the national education system, aimed at shaping students' character to be religious, morally upright, and moderate. Employing a qualitative approach through literature review, the study analyzes the contents of the Sisdiknas Law, compares it with previous regulations, and examines its implications for formal education practices. The findings reveal that the 2003 Sisdiknas Law provides broader opportunities for integrating Islamic values with scientific knowledge through a holistic approach and curriculum flexibility. IRE is envisioned not merely as the transmission of religious doctrines, but also as a medium for strengthening national identity and promoting religious moderation. The paper recommends enhancing teacher competence, fostering institutional collaboration, and strengthening policy support to develop IRE that is adaptive and responsive to contemporary challenges.
