Abstract

This article examines the relevance and contribution of the Learning by Doing instructional model developed by John Dewey to the development of scientific methodology in Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam or PAI). This model emphasizes the importance of direct experience in the learning process to foster active student engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The experiential approach is considered effective for internalizing Islamic values in a contextual manner within students’ daily lives, going beyond mere theoretical understanding. The study outlines the fundamental concepts of Dewey’s learning model, its key characteristics, and its application in PAI teaching practices. The analysis reveals that Learning by Doing can serve as a strong philosophical and practical foundation for enhancing the effectiveness of PAI, particularly in shaping students into religious, independent individuals who comprehend and practice Islamic teachings contextually. The implications of these findings highlight the essential role of PAI teachers as facilitators, motivators, and counselors in creating an active, reflective, and meaningful learning process capable of bridging religious values with the dynamics of modern life in a harmonious way.
