Abstract
Muhammadiyah is an Islamic reform organization that has had a significant impact on the progress of Muslims in Indonesia. The reforms carried out by Muhammadiyah are multidimensional, encompassing education, health, economy, and culture. In the field of education, Muhammadiyah has modernized Islamic education, which is crucial for the development of Islamic education in Indonesia. Muhammadiyah has enhanced the Islamic education curriculum by incorporating Islamic religious education into public schools and secular knowledge into religious schools. The Qur'anic model introduced by Muhammadiyah, which integrates Islamic studies into public schooling, has been adopted not only by Muhammadiyah's educational institutions but also by other Islamic groups as a model of education worthy of attention. Furthermore, Muhammadiyah has modernized madrasahs by integrating them with the pesantren system. This modernization involves the intensive introduction of modern educational institutional elements and modern scientific subjects. Muhammadiyah's educational reforms have led to various advancements in multiple sectors of Indonesian society. The historical roots of Muhammadiyah as an educational movement can be traced back to its objectives outlined from 1921 to 1971, emphasizing education as the foundation of its movement and actions. Muhammadiyah aims to provide a new perspective that education should be holistic and integrative, not dichotomously partial, contributing to national development and progress. This study examines the opportunities and challenges facing Muhammadiyah's education system. The researcher employs a qualitative approach with a library research method, utilizing sources such as research journals, articles, books, and related information to support the data. The findings indicate that Muhammadiyah's education system has many opportunities to compete due to: 1) its commitment to the tajdid (renewal) movement, 2) alignment with Indonesia and the 1945 Constitution, 3) relevance to contemporary demands, and 4) a strong network both nationally and internationally. The biggest challenge faced by Muhammadiyah is the fundamental role of technology in the current era of disruption.
