Abstract

Food is the main basic need for humans that must be fulfilled at all times. The right to obtain food is one of the human rights. As a basic need and human right, food has a very important meaning and role for the life of a nation. The availability of food that is smaller than the need for it can create economic instability. Various social and political unrest can also occur if food security is disrupted. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an increase in rice prices on the welfare of farmers in Sukaraja village. Data collection techniques in this study were interviews, observation and documentation. For technical analysis of data through percentage analysis. After conducting the research, there were results obtained, first, 61.3% or 46 farmers before the rice price increase was sufficient, but when there was an increase in rice prices, the economic situation of rice farmers became less good, namely with a percentage of 66.6% or 50 person. Second, the increase in rice prices also affects the income level of farmers. Some of the land cultivators stated that their income had increased, namely only 7 farmers with a percentage of 9.3%. Then for land owners their income decreases on average by a percentage of 56%, the remaining 34.6% of their income is fixed or stable. Third, the increase in rice prices also have a negative impact terha dap agricultural commodity prices ( pupu k, intektisida or pesticides ) with a percentage of 84% or 63 people. Fourth, the increase in rice prices did not cause the consumption pattern of the peasant community to decline, they said because rice was a basic need that could not be delayed and had to be met as soon as possible. The percentage, namely 69.3% of farmers, did not reduce or increase their consumption patterns. This means that the increase in rice prices has no effect on consumption patterns and only affects the income level of most farmers . However, 24% of farmers reduce their consumption of rice and make other foods containing carbohydrates as substitutes. From this research it can be concluded that the increase in rice prices cannot improve the welfare of farmers in Sukaraja village.
